So my biology professor asked if I was native american today out of nowhere.

The four people in my group and I were doing a group experiment on population growth nd stuff in biology today. My professor comes over, helps us out with a few things nd we are all laughing nd joking around. Then after a silence, he asks me if i was American Indian. I nod yes and he asks which tribe. I say Cherokee. All of a sudden 2 people in my group and around 6 people in the 20 person classroom said they were Cherokee too. I literally face-palmed without thinking but I don’t think anyone noticed. They then one by one told the professor how they “know” they are Cherokee. All of them said something along the lines of how their great  grandmothers’ hair was so long and other, how many dream catchers they had, how one-with-nature they were, nd other ..hipster ideas about what a native is but not one person mentioned actual tribal enrollment or any kind of proof except me. Also, i am the only black person in the class besides another guy nd he said he was part Blackfoot but all he mentioned was the long hair. For all i know, some of them might have really been native but it seems they only think that because their grandma was a hippie. =/
